KJ & Co. is a boutique marketing strategy firm helping technology and clean tech companies to flourish by avoiding bad marketing decisions. We enable clients to make good choices about how to apply their budget and people resources for the best business outcomes. How do we do this?
First, we prevent wishful thinking by doing the research and analysis needed to support good decisions. But we don’t get tangled up in analysis-paralysis, forgoing intuitive judgments. And we don’t always tell you what you want to hear either.
Second, we take a disciplined and holistic view of marketing. We believe that marketing tactics must grow out of a fundamental understanding of the business goals, the market needs, and the value your products uniquely deliver. With this foundation, we help you craft the right mix of marketing investments.
A Message from Karen Janowski
I enjoy applying my 25+ years of hi-tech marketing experience to helping clients to create businesses that flourish.
In my career to date, I’ve launched over 30 new products that collectively generated over $500 million in revenue. I have managed all aspects of marketing, product management, research and analysis. I delight in connecting with specialized resources to get the job done well.
I like to work closely with clients, both on strategy and hands-on implementation. My greatest joy is helping clients to make good decisions about applying limited funds and people resources in order to make the best progress toward their business goals. I love sinking my teeth into gnarly client problems, such as:
- Which markets and market segments should I go after?
- How do I best describe my value proposition and positioning?
- What are the best methods to grow my business? What pays off vs. what is a waste of resources?
- How should I price my product?
- What sales channels are right for my business?
- When should I hire a VP of Sales? VP of Marketing?
- How much should I budget for marketing?
As a veteran of four pre-IPO startup management teams, I bring an understanding of the challenges faced by small businesses. At the same time, my experience as an employee of and a consultant to Fortune 500 companies provides insight into companies that many small businesses target as customers.
I have a special interest in working with companies that that are bringing to market products that will have a positive impact on our natural environment – i.e., clean tech and other resource-efficient products.
My formal academic training is in the fields of marketing, finance, applied economics and small business management. I have a BS degree from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley and an MBA from Stanford University. In addition, I’ve taken courses in sustainability, creativity, and group facilitation techniques. I’m also an autodidact and lifelong learner who loves to pick up new skills and techniques and learn about new industries.
I look forward to working with you.
